Legendary Jamaican reggae artist Gregory Isaacs has been receiving the remix treatment as of late, being the centre of a highly anticipated project that is to be unveiled on the 15th April through Necessary Mayhem Records. Music producer, Curtis Lynch, draws together Isaac’s finest tracks with a modern twist, bringing the ‘Night Nurse’ star’s catalogue of hits back into the limelight.

Legendary Jamaican reggae artist Gregory Isaacs has been receiving the remix treatment as of late, being the centre of a highly anticipated project that is to be unveiled on the 15th April through Necessary Mayhem Records. Music producer, Curtis Lynch, draws together Isaac’s finest tracks with a modern twist, bringing the ‘Night Nurse’ star’s catalogue of hits back into the limelight.

Opening with ‘Innercity Lady’, Lynch has heightened every available attribute, making the hit bouncier and more defined. The song combines the delightful eccentricity of keyboards, improving the fun factor and overall producing the ultimate feel-good track. The hype continues through to the next song, ‘Jealously’, which is taken from Isaac’s 1989 album IOU. The clarity of Isaac’s voice is exceptionally preserved, providing a clear focus on the star’s earthy vocals. Within the dub master, the focus is flipped to highlight the music and in effect makes the track far more sinister. The layering of vocals creates an uneasy sense of paranoia, creating further depth and meaning into the reconstruction.

Other songs including ‘Mind Yuh Dis’ and ‘Temporary Lover’ are made to sound much more electronic, with beats that pop and leap from the speakers. Elsewhere, the sincerity and sweetness of ‘Night Nurse’ is completely transformed and perhaps not as great as it had the potential to be, yet the remix is still enjoyable.

The final edit of the tropical ‘Private Beach Party’ is perhaps the biggest compliment to Isaac, which is beautifully remixed to create the perfect summer track. Like most of the remixes on this album, Lynch has succeeded in providing listeners with a sense of warmth and excitement, whilst playing on Isaac’s pure talents in creating a fantastic updated catalogue of hits.
